PHOTOSHOP WORLD 2011 @ Las Vegas

Wonderful experience to be taught by the best professional photographers and designers in the world! Many of the techniques I used to edit these photos were learned at Photoshop World such as skin softening, eye vain fixing, special selecting methods, and more. The experience helped me learn especially about the importance of light in photos and how to position models for portraits.

Contest Entry Photos

These are two photos I recently entered into the Photography Society contest for Endurance unedited photos. These photos I took at a Mountain-Man event they had in eastern Idaho. I felt the old man fit good into endurance because he’s looking off into the distance and perhaps thinking about his life. The Indian seemed to be enduring with his native style and backward glance.

Portraits

36×24 Picture

The Path of Life 38×24
4/30/2011 – 8:00 p.m. – Beaver Dick Park, Rexburg, Idaho
Nikon D80 – Pattern mode – f-stop: 4.5 – shutter: 1/80
Edits
Using bridge raw mode I changed the saturation, colors, and lighting.
I created a HDR with Photomatics to get more of the details to come out in the trees and path.

Using Photoshop I created a mask and combined the parts of both these pictures I liked.

I chose this image because I felt accomplished because when I took the picture I loved the scenery but when I looked at it in Photoshop it didn’t originally capture what I saw. With the light coming through the trees, there was a beautiful scene created. I used different parts from the raw and HDR images I created because each contained different parts I liked. I really liked the trees in the HDR but liked the sky in the raw edit.

Hotel 23 & Old Barn

We went to this really old hotel they used for a movie with Tom Hanks that had to do with every room being labeled 23. The person that let us in to take photos was in the process of restoring the place. he First picture is the only room he has fully restored so far.

We went to an old barn and house to get portrait shots and on the way we stopped to take picture at this old gas station with rolling hills around it. I was able to get every one in a neat position with their cameras facing all different directions. The picture on the right was done with a portrait umbrella that flashes light to give it this look.

I took these pictures at the Mountain Men event where they get together and relive a legend told of old about mountain men that survived in the area a long time ago. They did hatchet throwing, archery, rifles, and other things to simulate the period. We were able to get good pictures of people wearing authentic clothing and try it on ourselves.

Fine Art Templete

It’s often nice to have templates you can use to make neat selections of images and implement cool designs. This simple window template breaks the image up into four frames that gives the picture a classy feel with the title of the work underneath it.

Hair – 6/11/2011; 2:00 p.m.; St. Anthony; f/7.1; 1/500; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; I loved the wavy hair and the face pointing to the right to make it feel like she is searching. The colors in her hair with all the different lighting really looks neat. I used HDR to really get the colors to come out.

Hotel 23 – 6/11/2011;12:00 p.m.; St. Anthony; f/2.3; 1/25; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; The color really came out in this picture through HDR. I like the bright red wall and the old looking door on the left. The side angle also matches how crazy this room looks.

There are a lot of different lighting effects you can do in pitch dark with flashlights or even blurred light from cars and such. In this blog I show some of the different effects I’m able to produce through painting light on objects, painting light in mid air to spell, catching blurred light, and moving the camera to capture light.

Name – 6/13/2011; 12:00 a.m.; Rexburg, Idaho;f/8; s13; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; I used my phones LCD light to spell my name in the air. I pointed the light directly at the camera as I wrote my name.

Pain –  6/13/2011; 12:00 a.m.; Rexburg, Idaho;f/8; s13; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; I took this shop in the complete dark with a slight light coming through the door in the background. To capture this scene, I got my roommate to flash his light around me at really close range. The light color on my face and it being blurry I feel adds a neat effect.

Modeling – 6/11/2011; 12:00 a.m.; Rexburg, Idaho;f/8; s20; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; To capture this I shined the light on the models face for 3 seconds out of the 20 second shutter. The barn was pitch dark and came out really nice. I added a little saturation in Photoshop.

Frisbee Blur – 6/13/2011; 12:00 a.m.; Rexburg, Idaho;f/8; s20; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; My roommates were throwing a frisbee with a light in it around and I caught the blur action it created.

Camera Motion – 6/13/2011; 1:00 a.m.; Rexburg, Idaho;f/8; s20; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; I used the variety of different street lights for this image. I took my camera and moved it around for the 13 second shutter speed time and got this image.

Adding Borders

Borders can give picture a nice clean look that is professional. Borders can also be used to help give you a focus in an image.

Rexburg Idaho Temple -4:00 p.m.; Rexburg, ID; f10; 1/320; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; Used HDR on this Photo to get more of the color. I added more space to the outside by extending each side using canvas size under the image menu in Photoshop. I then added a black layer and put it behind the image layer.

Flowers -12:00 p.m.; Rexburg, ID; f4.5; 1/100; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; Added saturation and vibrancy to the image with adjustments layers. I then created a light blue layer at a low opacity and used the square marque took and deleted out the middle.

Horse touch -5:00 p.m.; Rexburg, ID; f8; 1/320; Canon PowerShot SX30 IS; Added saturation and vibrancy to the image with adjustments layers. I then created a burned color layer at a low opacity and used the square marque took and deleted out the middle.
